YAN, Song: Central processing of the logographic Chinese language and alphabetic languages – implications for learning a second language
The manner in which languages with different underlying phonetic and written systems are represented and processed in the brain constitutes a key question in neuro-linguistic research. Some researchers assume common or shared neural structures, while others propose a heterogeneity of underlying neural substrates related to the type of language system. Our investigation focused on the cortical areas used in processing the German and Chinese languages and utilised subjects who are bilingual. Our aim was to gain an insight into the processing of the two languages by considering how one language might influence the acquisition of the other. Such a study is of general interest in relation to both language learning and language teaching; particularly in the development of appropriate learning strategies.
